|
|
-
This is
a benign (not cancerous) tumor of the breast,
usually occurring in younger
women.
|
 |
- Lump that is round, firm, movable,
non-tender, and usually 1/2 inch to two inches in
diameter
|
 |
- There are several possible
treatment plans, depending on the surgeon's considered
judgment, the patient's age-group, the circumstances of the
particular case, and the feelings of the patients.
- The surgeon will decide, in conjunction with the
patient, the best way to distinguish a fibroadenoma
from breast cancer:
- Repeated observation of the
patient
- Fine-needle aspiration of the
breast mass
- Core biopsy or incisional
biopsy
- Surgical removal of the mass
- In younger women, repeated office-visits, at which the
mass is palpated by the surgeon, possibly with repeated
testing (Ultrasound and/or
mammogram), coupled with regular self-examination by the
patient, might be done.
- In women over the age of 30
- 35, biopsy might be done, or surgical removal of the
complete mass, depending on the surgeon's considered
judgment.
- Excision, at any age, if the patient is an adult, and this is her
request
