Thyroiditis
is any process that causes swelling or inflammation of the thyroid gland. This group of diseases is divided into four main categories. The process may or may not be painful. Often, the enlarged thyroid gland may put pressure on some of the surrounding structures in the neck, which can lead to symptoms. The four main types of thyroiditis are Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Subacute Thyroiditis, Suppurative Thyroiditis, and Riedel's thyroiditis.
