Sporotrichosis

more about Sporotrichosis

  • This is a fungus that is found in soil, plants, and decaying wood. It causes an infection when a Laceration or wound occurs, in which contaminated material gets under the skin.  Rose gardeners are often susceptible when thorns injure them.  Gardeners, landscapers, florists, and nursery workers are at risks.  Those with weakened immune systems (cancer, AIDS, and addicts) are at greater risks.  Transmission from cats and other animals have also been documented.

  • Hard non-tender skin nodule
  • Ulcerations may occur
  • Lymphatic vessels may become visible and palpable (you are able to feel them)
  • Spreading to lungs, bones, joints or central nervous system generally only occurs in those who are immunocompromised (e.g., those on cancer chemotherapy).

  • Fungal cultures
  • Antibody testing may help diagnose disseminated diseases in immunocompromised individuals

  • Itraconazole by mouth for most cases
  • Amphotericin B intravenously for severe infections
