Cluster headache

  • This is a specific headache syndrome with very distinct features. The headaches and associated symptoms (described below) usually occur at night, awakening the individual from sleep, tending to last less than 2 hours. The episodes occur daily for weeks, and then remit for weeks. The cause is unknown.

  • Pain over one eye
  • Nasal Congestion on one side
  • Watery drainage ("runny nose") on one side
  • Eye tearing in one eye
  • Eye redness in one eye
  • Small pupil in one eye, drooped eyelid and Double Vision

  • Acute attack:
    1. Inhalation of 100% oxygen
    2. Sumatriptan (Immitrex) injection
    3. Dihydroergotamine
    4. Ergotamine tartate aerosol
    5. Butorphanol tartate nasal spray
  • Preventive (prophylactic) medications:
    1. Ergotamine tartate
    2. Propranolol
    3. Amitriptyline
    4. Cyproheptadine
    5. Lithium carbonate
    6. Prednisone
    7. Verapamil
    8. Methysergide

  • In some individuals certain foods or alcohol trigger attacks. In those individuals, these factors should be avoided or eliminated.
