Phenytoin overdose and Dilantin Toxicity

  • Dilantin is a commonly used medication for the treatment of Seizures.
  • Ataxia
  • Mental Confusion
  • Blood test determines elevated serum dilantin level

  • Overdose Symptoms

- Overdose can lead to decreased heart function or Cardiac Arrest.  Symptoms include staggered walking, rapid eye movements, unusual body movements, and drowsiness.  Blood tests can determine the level of the overdose.  Overdose can occur at regularly prescribed doses if the dose is only a little too high, because it will build up in the blood over time.

  • Overdose Treatment
    1. Needs emergency medical treatment
      • Charcoal given by mouth or nasogastric tube
      • Supportive care until body clears the Dilantin
    1. Overgrowth of the gums (gingival hyperplasia)
    2. Note: As with all medications, other rare side effects and allergic reactions may occur.
