Benign Tumors of the Larynx
|
 |
- There are two basic types of benign
tumors of the larynx. One type is called vocal cord nodules,
which occur in pairs and form at the junction between the
anterior (front) 1/3 and posterior 2/3 of the vocal cords.
They occur because of "abuse" of the vocal cords, either by
screaming or singing.
- Another type is called polypoid
type nodules (polyplike lesions) of the vocal cords, which may occur from Hypothyroidism (low
thyroid conditions), industrial chemical irritants, smoking,
or vocal "abuse" as
above.
|
 |
- Direct laryngoscopy -- an ear, eye,
and nose specialist looks at the vocal cords (this procedure
is done in the
office).
|
 |
- Discontinue vocal abuse -- e.g.,
stop screaming or discontinue singing
- Speech therapy can help change
voice habits.
- Surgical removal of nodules that remain after
discontinuing vocal abuse.
- Discontinue inciting activity,
e.g., stop smoking, remove chemical exposure, discontinue
singing, etc.
- Inhaled corticosteroids (e.g., Flovent) may
quicken the resolution of this type of nodule.
- Removal of the vocal cords (if too thickened) may be
advised.
