- Laryngitis is an inflammation of the vocal cords in which speech becomes hoarse and/or whisper-like/inaudible.

- Hoarseness, whisper-like voice or loss of voice
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Restlessness
- Air hunger
- Fatigue

- Most cases are caused by viruses, or over-using the voice.
- Diphtheria
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Moxarella catarrhalis

- Throat is examined for Pharyngitis (infection)
- Neck is examined for presence of Stridor (wheezing sound heard by stethoscope)

 |
- Avoid loud speech such as shouting or singing.
- If severe, physician will often instruct child not to speak at all for the next few days
- If Diphtheria, Haemophilus influenza, or Moxarella catarrhalis are suspected, then antibiotics usually are prescribed.
