  • Melanosis Coli is a benign condition of the colon.  It is an abnormality noticed during Sigmoidoscopy or Colonoscopy.  During the exam, the doctor will usually see brown spots or a discoloration of the wall of the colon.  It appears in patients who abuse laxatives.  The laxatives most commonly associated with this finding are cascara, senna, and aloe-based products.  It is not a serious condition, and there is no specific treatment is needed.  Actually, the patient just needs to stop abusing laxatives.

  • The problem is due to overuse of laxatives.

  • Diagnosis is based on the way the colon looks on examination.
  • If needed, the diagnosis can be confirmed by biopsy.

  • No treatment needed, other than discontinuation of the laxative being abused

  • No specific complications are known

  • Stop using the laxative
