Avascular Necrosis of the Hip

- Various diseases can damage or
affect the blood supply to the hip. When the blood supply is
compromised, part of the hipbone may die (necrosis). This is
known as avascular necrosis of the
hip.

|
- Pain usually starts in knee (and
not hip)
- Hip is painful to rotate
inwards
|
|
- Imaging
- CT scan
- MRI
- Note: This condition does not show up on plain X-Rays
|
|
- Avoid lifting anything heavy for a
few weeks, in order to allow the hip to heal.
- Surgery may be considered if this
fails.
