- This is the medical term for the inability to coordinate the voluntary muscles involved in walking. Simply put, the brain does not properly coordinate the muscles of the body involved in walking and balancing. This most commonly occurs when injury or disease of the cerebellar portion of the brain has occurred. Causes include Brain Tumor and Friedrich's Ataxia, a
genetic disease. (See these sections) Ataxia can also
occur with dilantin toxicity or metabolic disorders.
