Swallowed blood syndrome or neonatal gastrointestinal pseudo-hemorrhage

  • Blood or bloody stool is passed on the 2nd or 3rd day of life as a result of the infant's having swallowed maternal blood.

  • Bloody stool or vomiting

  • Infants may swallow blood during delivery or may swallow blood from a fissure in the mother's nipple.

  • Apt test for differentiation between infant's blood and maternal blood

  • It usually requires none.

  • Gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage
