Meckel Diverticulum


  • This is a common congenital abnormality that consists of an outpouching of the small bowel, which is a remnant of developmental structures.
  • It is usually located along the antimesenteric border, near the junction of the small bowel with the colon in the right lower abdomen.

  • Symptoms usually occur within 2 years of life
  • Intermittent, painless rectal bleeding
  • Abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Brick-colored stool

  • It is caused by failure to reabsorb a developmental structure called an embryonic yolk sac.

  • Based on clinical findings
  • Stool smear for occult blood
  • Barium studies
  • Technetium scan
  • Superior mesenteric angiography

  • Surgical removal for bleeding
  • Iron replacement
  • Transfusion
